Masaki has been staring at Sho's sleeping face for a while. He should be focusing on his mathematics questions that Sho asked him to finish while he was taking a nap but he find it hard to concentrate as his eyes would unconsciously wander to his best friend's sleeping face. It was hard to concentrate when he had the urge of kissing those pouty lips of his.
'I should turn my back at him. I won't be able to finish like this..' Masaki thought as he quickly changed his seating. The room was quite small that he could lean against Sho's bed. He was still conscious of Sho but at least he could concentrate better that way. Masaki really didn't want to disappoint his friend who was kind enough to help him with his homework.
Sho was a model student, like an idol in his school. He was a star of the soccer club and the one who was topping the ranking for every exam. . To add to Sho's good reputation, he was the president of students council too. Well, to be fair Masaki wasn't really at the bottom. He was more towards in the middle of the ranking but his mathematics was pretty bad. His mother suggested that they hire a tutor but when Sho knew about it, he offered his help.
"And he is super handsome too..." Masaki's eyes widened as he covered his mouth in panic when he heard his own voice mumbling out loud. He quickly turned to check on Sho. To his relief, his friend was still sleeping soundly. 'Thank god... That was close. But really, he is so handsome.....'
When he realized that he was drooling over Sho, he quickly shook his head and patted his cheek. "Concentrate Masaki, concentrate!" He softly scolded himself. He was ready to get back to his study when he heard Sho's voice along with the feel of Sho's fingers running through his hair. "Who is handsome again?"
"Waahh!" Masaki shouted as the pencil he was holding got thrown onto the floor. He thought his heart was popping out of his chest because of the shock. He was gently rubbing his chest as he stole a glance at Sho. He hated it when Sho was smirking at him knowingly.
"Definitely not a jerk like you!" Masaki spouted, quickly turned away to hide his embarrassed face. Sho was laughing gleefully from behind him. In the end he laughed it out too but deep inside Masaki cursed himself for not being careful. It somehow made him feel a little nostalgic. Or more like a dejavu of the day he realized his feeling for Sho. The day that they both pretended it never happened.
Masaki was hanging around Sho's room reading shojo manga that belong to Sho's sister. They were laughing at the cringy act of the scene they both just did. Sho was lying on the bed earlier saying it was cold. He then sat up on his bed with the cover still covering his lower body and legs. Sho was still laughing so much at Masaki's reaction when he said those flirty pick up lines.
"You are cute Masaki, you know that?" Sho said after he finally stopped laughing. He really meant it. He always thought that his friend is so cute.
As soon as Masaki heard Sho said such thing to him, he thought he was joking but when he realized that Sho was being serious, his whole face turned tomato-red. "Ehh!! What? Me? Cute? Why?" He tried to sound natural to the other guy but he obviously failed.
"Because I said so. You are cute. Very." Sho leaned down, getting their face closer and even touched his nose's tip with his finger while speaking.
"STOP IT." Masaki immediately hid his face with his palm. He was scared at how his heart was thumping loudly.
"Okay okay, don't get mad at me now." Sho pulled back as he laughed a little bit, didn't want to upset his best friend even more. It made him happy that Masaki was still his innocent self.
After few silent minutes; Sho climbed down the bed and sat next to him before he asked him. "Ne, tell me Masaki, did you ever kissed anyone before?" He didn't know why or how did he suddenly spouted the question. He was as surprised as Masaki but he was better at hiding it.
Masaki's eyes widened at the sudden question. He grabbed his jeans, feeling very nervous all of the sudden. "K-ki-kiss??" He asked, stuttering a little as he was in shock.
Sho knew he shouldn't be doing the thing he was about to do but it was hard to stop now when the stone is already rolling. "Yes, kiss. It is really a waste that no one ever kiss these lucious lips that you have." Sho whispered as his finger got too close, almost brushing his lips but he didn't touch them.
"Seriously Sho-Chan! It's not funny anymore. Stop messing with me like that!" Masaki scolded him, closing his eyes as he moved his face away from his friend. He didn't know why Sho acted like that and he didn't like it.
"But I am serious!" Sho made his point. He was serious about it but he didn't want to scare Masaki so he paused his speech a little bit as he was organizing his thought in his mind.
After a while, he continued, "Ne... Masaki... how about I do it to you? I mean how about if I kiss you? Have you never wondered how kiss and been kissed feel like? You know, like the manga that you always read" Sho carefully filtered his words. He adjusted his sitting and faced Masaki properly.
"I want to try the feeling too! We both didn't have the chance to kiss anyone! And if one day you have a chance, you wanted it to be perfect right?" He continued his sweet little trap, hoping so much that Masaki would agree.
These whole talking was a shock on Masaki's side. He had never ever thought that he would talk about such things with his best friend Sakurai Sho chan. He admitted that he really liked Sho more than anyone else ever since he could remember. Masaki thought that it was just a normal like and so he didn't put too much meaning into it. For him, it was just a very strong friendship between both of them, or perhaps he didn't want to search for an answer to these feeling he was having. He didn't answer him for a good five minutes. Sure he was curious but he thought first kiss is something sacred.
Sho touched the other's shoulder when he though the silent was unbearable. "Hello...say something." He said. His touch pulled Masaki out from his thought. It actually shocked his friend.
"No! I don't want to! Don't you even try!" He absolutely refused Sho's offer. Why would he even accept a kiss from a guy out of blue? Yes, he liked Sho but he didn't think he was in love with him. 'It must be just a joke... He should know how important a first kiss to me.' Is this his new way of teasing me? I will not let him win!' He thought internally, glaring as Sho as he did.
Sho didn't wait or ask any longer but swiftly leaned forward and attached their lips together. He couldn't believe what was happening! His heart was pounding hard and the feeling of those soft and tender lips against his own was... super amazing! It was too sudden that he forgot how to refuse him. Without even realizing it, he responded to Sho's kiss, kissing him back.
They both enjoyed every second of this kiss. It was unbelievably amazing. Sho cupped Masaki's chin, deepening the kiss even more. It was too addictive. He didn't want to stop this moment at all; but he had too when they both need to breathe again.
He finally left the lips alone; but his face was still close to Masaki's flustered face. His slightly open mouth was still only few inch away from Masaki's. He could totally feel the heavy breathing from the other and how his chest was moving fast.
Masaki felt like he was in a trance, like his body and action wasn't even his. He could only moved freely when he last Sho combing through his silky hair. His eyes widened when he came to realize what had happened. His body, his lips still remembered strongly what had happened. He could still feel Sho inside his mouth. 'What just happened??' Is the only one thing screaming inside Masaki's mind but his tongue still sore so he couldn't say anything out loud .
"Did you like it?" Sho asked softly.
Hearing Sho asking him so dearly after being such a bully made him a little angry but relief. He liked the sweet caring Sho better. He didn't know that he was crying until he felt the warm tears falling from his eyes. His mind kept on telling him what had happened like a broken record. 'He kissed me! Sho just kissing me! We kissed...' He wasn't sure of his own feelings as they were super mixed. He thought he was angry but there was also a part of him that was happy.
"Masaki...are you crying?? I am sorry!! I really I didn't meant to-" Sho panicked seeing Masaki cried like that. He never saw him that weak, shaken and in shock like that since they become friends long years ago.
Suddenly Masaki just stood up from where he was sitting and said "It is getting late, I have to go home." as he wiped his tears away quickly and moved to the door.
" Wait!!" Sho called out to him but no one answered as Masaki stormed out of his room. He wanted to chase after him but it was like his legs were chained to the floor. "What you have done..." He muttered to himself. Judging from Masaki's reaction, he knew that he hurt him bad.
The only thing Masaki was thinking the whole time he was walking home was how amazing the kiss was; He kept touching his lips all the time. "I should be hating him... But I don't. What is this feeling? Friend would not feeling this giddy over a kiss..." Masaki mumbled softly along the way. He quickly escaped to his room as soon as he reached home. With a big sighed he closed the door and locked it. He threw himself onto the bed, digging his face into his pillow and breath deeply.
"I think this feeling is not only a friendship...I might actually love him... Love..."Masaki couldn't control his smile. 'I'll ask Sho chan properly why he kissed me... Nah, I'll just ask him to take responsibility for stealing my first kiss and go out with me!'
For the next few days, Sho decided to not touch the topic again and tried his best to pretend that the kiss never happen and act so normally around him. Seeing how Sho acted, Masaki couldn't bring himself to ask about it. He thought hard by himsef, thinking what had really happened. In the end he could only come out with one explanation, it was just puberty and curiosity.
"He don't like me... Sho don't like me... He didn't kiss me because he likes me... everything was just a joke... A stupid kissing experiment... Well, he didn't say that he love me in the first place...how can I stop this feeling?" Masaki kept crying when he was alone at his home seeing how Sho act as if nothing happened at all. It might not be a big deal for Sho but it was for him. He couldn't put out the flame that Sho lit inside of him.

Masaki sighed heavily as he paced slowly, calculating the time until graduation. He hugged himself as the early spring breeze passed through him. "Uwaah, it's damn cold." He whined as he placed his hands inside the pockets of his coat.
The closer he was to graduation, the more restless he became. He was thankful that he had exam the previous week to distract him but now that the exam was over, he couldn't help but kept thinking about Sho. His relationship with Sho was turning cold because of what happened a few weeks ago. It wasn't even Sho's fault. It was just him getting hurt by himself.
It was just a coincidence that he was at the chemistry lab that afternoon, the building at the further back of the school. Mr Suzuki asked him for help as the class representative so he couldn't avoid it. He opened the window to get some fresh air and quickly hide when he heard footsteps. He knew that the spot under the big sakura tree was famous for the students confessing their love.
Out of curiosity, he hid and peeked. He was surprised to see the pretty sophomore girl that everyone was talking about. If it wasn't because of his stupid one sided feeling for Sho, he would probably pin for her too. 'Who's the lucky ...' Before he could finish his question, his heart exploded when he saw someone that he knew very well approaching. At the very moment his mind went blank and he could feel his heart was beating faster.
He stayed silent, praying that Mr Suzuki won't be appearing anytime soon. Masaki carefully peeked but he couldn't see Sho as the trunk of the big sakura tree blocked his view. He couldn't really recall what did the girl say but it was still crystal clear to him till today the answer that Sho gave her that day, "I am sorry but I have someone that I hold very dear to me. She is the only person I want to date. Thank you for your feeling but I am really sorry."
It shocked him so much that he froze there on the spot, not realizing when was it that Sho and that girl left. He didn't even realize that he was crying until he heard Mr Suzuki asking him if he was okay, thinking that he was sick. He took advantage of his misunderstanding and excused himself. He didn't know how did he manage to get home. He locked himself inside his room and cried his heart out.
He thought a lot that night and by the morning he finally decided that he didn't want to lose a friend. Sure he was so damn jealous of whoever that girl is but he kept consoling himself that lover would probably seperated sooner or later but friendship last forever. But for the time being he didn't think that he could hide his feeling. So the only thing that he could do is try distancing himself.
He asked his mother to hire a tutor and started using it as a reason to avoid Sho. Of course Sho was against it but he insisted that it was better that way since Sho needed to focus on his exam too. When he said that he would hate himself forever if he became a reason for Sho's result to be falling it made his friend reluctantly agreed.
But even after the exam, he kept avoiding Sho. At first Sho was putting up with him but yesterday they had it bad. Masaki hated that he couldn't stop his one sided feeling for Sho. He tried avoiding any conversation by giving him short answers but he could see how it frustrated Sho. When Sho accused him of avoiding him and demanded the reason, he could only stare at his feet.
"Say something. Are you mad at me or something?" Sho asked sternly. He knew Sho was angry. But he didn't dare to open his lips as he could feel that he would pour his feeling out so he bit his tougue.
"Fuck! Fine, suits yourself. I will not bother with you anymore." Sho's angry tone made him close his eyes as his heart trembled. The sound of the door got slammed made him startled as he quickly opened his eyes. Sho had left him. Masaki could only stare at the door, feeling the warm liquid falling down his cheeks.
Masaki looked around as he came out of his long flashback. He was infront of the stairs leading to his tutor's home. It was probably because he had been coming to that place everyday for weeks that his body sort automatically moved to that direction. 'I guess I should pay him a visit since I am already here. I should thank him since I think I did pretty well.' Masaki thought as he climbed the stairs.
He was on the last staircase Takizawa san's door opened. When two men walked out kissing intimately with arms around each other, he froze. He watched them in awe. 'They.... are kissing. French greeting? But that.... so...he's gay?' Masaki thought it looked natural and somehow sweet. It made his heart race a little.
All of them were silent when their eyes finally met. Masaki could see how Takizawa san look a bit conflicted at the sudden event. Trying to break the awkward situation, Masaki greeted him, "Yo! Good evening."
"Ah. Yo, good evening." Takizawa san replied back. His friend or probably his lover whispered something to Takizawa san before he walked passed him, giving a small nod and a smile as he did.
"Do you want to come in?" Takizawa san asked, to which he nodded and quickly made his way inside his tutor's home. What he saw made him curious and it was probably something that he needed. Someone of the same side. Someone he could talk about the situation he was in at the moment.
***
He was almost choked if his dinner when he heard what his mother was telling them. His mom quickly rushed to his side, patting his back as he kept on coughing.
"What... what did.. you say?" Masaki asked her to repeat it.
"You didn't know? I thought you knew." His mom said nonchalantly as he gave him a glass of water.
"How did you know?" Masaki asked her after he gulped the whole glass of water. He didn't know how to react to the sudden news.
"I talked to his mother. He said Sho already went there to take the exam a few days ago and he passed. Well for someone as smart as Sho, I knew he would made it to ToDai ne. Ah, I wish you are as smart as he is." His mom ranted the info out.
His mind started to play a simulation of Sho leaving while his heart... he didn't know how to describe his heart. He could no longer feel the food he was eating. He excused himself saying he wanted to sleep early so he would look fresh for his graduation day.
He locked his room, afraid that his mom would come barging him when he was having his emotional turmoil. Masaki remembered the talk he had with his tutor. He was reluctant to follow his advice before but the sudden news shook his resolve. He was reluctant before as he was afraid that he would have to face Sho's hatred if he ever found out and afraid that Sho would be grossed out. He wanted so much to stay by his side. It was after a deep thought that he decided to love him silently by his side but knowing Sho would be leaving soon made everything crumble.
Masaki stood under the blooming Sakura trees. He clenched his graduation scroll as he looked up to the beautiful sakura flowers. 'It's beautiful.... it wouldn't be so bad to end love beautifully.' He thought as he smiled bitterly. His heart was pounding loudly inside. 'I wonder if he will come...'
It was graduation day. Someone as popular as Sho would probably has to deal with his fans. 'How I wish I could have his second button...' Masaki pouted as he thought about Sho's fans fighting over it. It's funny how second button from the top hold a big significant in Japanese culture. It was the closest to the heart so giving it to someone is like giving your heart. He thought it was helplessly romantic.
His heart grew restless as the time went by. 'I wonder if he got it..' Masaki slipped a letter in Sho's shoe locker saying he wanted to meet him under the sakura tree. Masaki peeked to see if he was coming. It was a bet he made with himself. Something that he decided after giving a lot of thought last night. If Sho read it and come to meet him, he would confess his feeling. But if Sho never appear, then he decided he would end his one sided love quietly.
It was a long agonizing wait. And in the end Sho never showed up. He waited for three long hours. The first hour was full of hope. The second hour was a pure torture. He was already gave up during the third hour. It was just him sitting there crying over the love that will never see the light of the day.
Masaki wiped the tear stains of his face. He stood up, fixing his clothes before he bent down and picke up his scroll. He then turned facing the sakura tree. 'It's time to give up...' It was painful. His first love ending just like that. After a while Masaki whispered softly, "Goodbye Sho... "
He turned around wanting to walk away but to his surprised there was Sho standing right behind him. He was right about his buttons. None was left. Masaki laughed. Partly because of his prediction was true and partly because he was happy.
"Your buttons are all gone." Masaki stated. He didn't know why but he suddenly feel so calm. He wasn't as nervous as three hours earlier. He stared at Sho's handsome face, thinking it was probably the last time he would see him for sometimes.
"Yeah. Those girls are crazy." Sho grunted as fixed his clothes. Sho was searching for something inside his pocket. When Sho suddenly looked at him with a sweet smile, he could feel his face got flustered. He turned away trying to calm his throbbing heart. He thought of what to say when he could meet his eyes next but he was surprised when Sho shove his hand to him, "Here! This is yours."
It was a button. He looked at Sho and his friend was smiling at him lovingly. Masaki's eyes started to tear up. He wasn't that stupid not to know what is the meaning of it but he wanted to be sure. "Which one?" He asked as the tears started to fall.
"The one here." Sho said pointing to his heart.
Unable to control his feeling, Masaki reached out for Sho's blazer, pulling him closer as he kissed him. Their second kiss after a very long time. The feel of Sho's lips on his felt so warm and tender. When Sho wanted to pull away, Masaki stopped him buy pulling him in for a deeper more passionate kiss. There's no way he would be satisfied with just a simple kiss after that long ass wait.
When Masaki suddenly remembered Sho's confession on having a girlfriend, he abruptly ended the kiss and pushed him away. He wanted to make everything clear before going any further. "I heard you when you rejected Maki-chan a few weeks ago. You said you have a girl that you like. You definitely was using the word "girl". So what will happen now?" Masaki demanded the answer.
"Well, she was you! It would cause an uproar if i use the word "guy". It was always you. It will always be you." Sho's explain made him feel like flying.
"But you're leaving me for Tokyo..." Masaki was crying again. He thought it was too cruel to part like that. He didn't believe in long distance relationship.
"I was going to ask you to come with me. I already found a good place," Sho said before he pause and kneeled in front of him. Masaki laughed at how cheesy Sho was, like the shojo manga he used to read in his room. Holding out his second button to him, Sho proposed, "So, Aiba Masaki, will you come to live with me in Tokyo? Be mine, Masaki.."
It was more that what he hoped for. He knew he should at least his parents for permission but there was no way he would reject the proposal. "Yes!" Masaki grabbed the button before kneeling down to kiss his boyfriend one more time.
